Practice manager's guide · Updated 7 October 2026

What CPR training does a GP practice need?

Include clinical and non-clinical staff, arrange practical CPR and AED training, and keep each person's record.

How often?

Under RACGP fifth-edition guidance, practice staff need CPR at least every three years. Follow a professional body's shorter interval when it applies. Annual updates are recommended to maintain skills.

Can it be entirely online?

No. GP CPR requirements include physical demonstration on a floor-level manikin, AED use and alignment with ARC guidance. A GP CPD CPR course is at least one hour.

What should the manager keep?

Keep each staff member's completion certificate and training record, including the date and next planned refresher. Track reception and other non-clinical staff as well as clinicians.

Does the whole team need ALS?

Course selection depends on staff roles. BLS is a practical starting point for the whole team. Consider ALS for clinicians who lead a resuscitation and PALS where the patient mix calls for paediatric skills. Confirm employer and CPD requirements before booking.

Planning an on-site session

List staff roles, available dates and the AED and emergency equipment your practice uses. Arrange a suitable room and protect time for everyone to practise. Ask for individual assessment results and a group record.
